Corfu -2

Corfu continued:

After returning to the old city we caught another bus to visit the old fortress. Earlier in the old town we had wanted to visit the new fortress but it was closed for rzepairs as an earthquake had caused some damage.  The old fortress was built by the Venitians to fend off Turkish invaders during the 15th century.  It was built upon the remains of an 8th century Byzantine castle and we'd seen this imposing structure which stands guard over the harbour of Corfu from the ship as we first entered the harbour early in the morning. The fortress has an artificial moat and a movable wooden bridge and it is one of the best preserved fortresses in Greece.

We spent another couple of hours exploring its many buildings. There was also an interesting museum with many Ancient Greek relics on display; fresco fragments, carved 3D marble frescoes, floor tile designs, clay pots, carved marble statues, weapons and tools. Here are just a few examples of the many displays we saw.

Within the fortress' massive stone walls were corridors, ramparts, tunnelled-corridors, a parade ground and even a Parthenon-like chapel. The 180 degree views from the top of the hill within the fortress were amazing. The sky was once again super azure blue in colour with just a few fluffy
clouds advisability was 100% across Corfu. A magic day once more. We took lots of photographs so enjoy these.

Later we navigated our way back to the old town, wandered through its fascinating alleys and visited a splendid church building with a beautiful plaza area where we had a capaccino  before boarding another local bus back to our ship.
